Otis Ashmore, educator and astronomer, was born in Lincoln
County, March 4, 1853, about two miles southeast of Lincolnton on the
old Ashmore place. He is the son of Jeremiah and Malinda J. (Wright)
Ashmore. Malinda J. (Wright) Ashmore was born in Lincoln Co., Ga
. June 12, 1819 and died in the town of Lincolnton October 20, 1901.
Jeremiah and Malinda are buried in the old Ashmore grave-yard.
The boyhood days of Otis Ashmore were spent on the farm in the
slavery time amid the tragic scenes of the Civil War. Work on the farm
by day and study of books by night was largely the rule for the
ambitious boy. During the years 1874-5 he attended Gainesville College.
He then taught High School for two years in Wilkes Co, Ga.. He then
taught school in Lincolnton, Ga.for two years and then taught in Harlem
Georgia for four years. He was President of Middle Georgia College at
Jonesboro, Ga. 1885-6. He then moved to Savannah Georgia to teach High
School Science for ten years, after which he was appointed
Superintendent of Chatham County Schools. After twenty years he retired and lived out his life in Savannah Ga. He was married to Editha
G. Collins of Harlem, Ga. They had one child who died at age six.
